Addiction to alcohol and drugs is a widespread malady that is treacherous because it is so often concealed.This course sets out in simple form the essentials for understanding alcohol and drug problems, for making an assessment of the individual. For giving appropriate help within one's own competence and for making referral to the agencies where necessary.

The background of students might be diverse, but whatever the background the aim of this course is to enable the student to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to help the suffering individual and their family members into recovery

There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme.

Duration:

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Average study of 140 hours.

Course syllabus:

Introduction

The qualities needed to counsel others in the therapeutic setting. The first part of the course will concentrate on drugs, addiction, counselling and the rehabilitation process. Towards the end of the course we will cover this in relation to alcohol addiction, counselling and the treatment process.

  • Coping with cravings

  • Warning signs of a relapse

Assignment eight:

  • Detoxication and rehabilitation of the user

Assignment nine:

  • What you should now about addiction to alcohol
  • Effects of alcohol to the body
  • Effects of alcohol to the family

Assignment ten:

  • Conducting the diagnostic interview

Assignment eleven:

  • Counsellors assessment and diagnosis of the problem

Assignment twelve:

  • Creating a treatment plan in relation to alcoholism

  • Treating the individual

  • Patient/Client programmes

Assessment method:

This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required.

Examination:

No examination is necessary

Qualification:

On completion of your course, you will receive two qualifications:

Qualification 1: 

Drug, Solvent and Alcohol Abuse Counselling Diploma

Diploma entitling you to use the letters SAC Dip after your name.

Qualification 2:

ASET Level 4 Drug, Solvent and Alcohol Abuse Counselling Award

This Course leads to an ASET Level 4 Award Certificate for successful learners. That means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (in which case GCSE's are at levels 1 and 2 and A Levels are at level 3).

The Award has been designed by a learning provider to meet specific learners' or employers' requirements and as such is not listed as a qualification on NQF. While the duration, content or assessment may vary from similar national qualifications, in accrediting the programme at level 3. ASET attests that its learning outcomes are at an equivalent level to a level 4 national qualification.

Professional membership:

On completion of this course students can apply for membership to 'Counselling' - a registered charity - and they will be able to use the initials 'CCC Reg.' after their names. (See website: http://www.counselling.ltd.uk)

On completion of this course students can also apply for membership to the Society for Holistic Therapists and Coaches (SHTC), a professional body who are dedicated to recognised standards of qualification and practice - students will also be able to use the initials 'SHTC' after their names.

Practical Training

Optional practical training is run through the SHTC and is available upon request for this course.
