Dress Making and Fashion Design course: Whether your ultimate aim is to make a career of Fashion Design, to run your own business as a Designer/Dressmaker or maybe just to be competent at making your own or your children's clothes, then by choosing this course, you're well on your way to fulfilling your dream in Fashion Design.

The course is structured to teach you an awareness of both fashion items and the industry by encouraging you to look around you. You will learn about fabrics, patterns, and the basic equipment you will need for garment construction.

Fashion Awareness

Introduce and discuss the different aspects of fashion
Examine the following colour groups: Jewel, Pastel, Neutrals, Classics and Earth
Discuss how the body shape is influenced by different stlye lines
Summarise how you would take body measurements

Patterns

Discuss the various types of patterns available and the process of selection
Explain how a commercial pattern differs from a trace pattern
Summarise how pattern markings assist in the cutting and making of clothing
Describe how you would select a sewing pattern

Fibres in Common Use

Evaluate the fibres most commonly used in dressmaking
Examine the benefits of cotton clothing
List and describe the various man made fibres

Tools and Equipment

Analyse the smaller tools and larger equipment that are necessary in fashion design
List the essential tools required in dressmaking
Summarise when you would use an overlocker sewing machine
Describe your understanding  of the term "haberdashery"

Lays

Discuss laying and cutting fabric, marking up techniques, shaping, gathers and seams
Explain the function of a lay
Summarise the use of darts on garments
Identify the various seams and explain under what cirumstances they would be used

Lined Bodices

Summarise your understanding of facings, collars, cuffs and pockets
Explain why facings are necessary on a garment
Describe the following types of collar: Flat, Mandarin and Peter Pan

Closing and Fastenings

Examine the different types of fasteners and discuss how buttonholes, sleeves, waistbands and hems finish off a garment
Introduce and discuss the various types of buttonholes
Describe the following sleeves: Raglan, Epaulet, Dolman, Bishops, Dropped and Kimono

Fabric Layout

Summarise the Importance of layout, cutting and stitching and explain the use of yokes and vents
Introduce and discuss the advantages of stretch sewing and overlocking
Dicuss for what purpose you would use stretch sewing
Explain the purpose of a rolled hem attachment

Fashion Awareness

Describe various body shapes, planning a wardrobe and the importance of make up, hairstyles and accessories
List the 8 different body shapes
Summarise what comprises a foundation wardrobe
List the artiicles calculated to be the main accessories in fashion

Introduction to Fashion Drawing

Examine presentation, techniques of fashion drwaing and summarise ideas on designing
Summarise when the following media would be used to enhance designs: Lead pancoils and Pen and Ink
Examine the significance of layout in dressmaking

There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme.

This course is open to students of all ages and backgrounds. Enrolments can be taken at anytime of the year unlike the traditional local college who tend only to enrol in September. Home Learning offers true flexibility.

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Students are welcome to complete this course as quickly as they want to.

On average this course is completed in 110 hours (7/8 months).  Extensions can be arranged if students do not complete within the year and charges will apply. We would ask you to contact our office on 0800 0131030 for latest extension fees if required.

We recommend that students complete 3-4 hours per week as a minimum to get the most from this course. Remember to work out a study plan / timetable before you start and try and stick to it.

This course is issued in paper format. Your course materials will be delivered to you at the specified address within 7 days of enrolment. International students should allow up to 21 days for delivery.

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. Please remember our tutors are here to help. Never be embarrassed to ask for help.

This course is completed using continual assessment followed by a home based examination paper which will be forwarded to you from home upon completion of the required assignments. This course consists of eleven lessons overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary

Q: How soon after enrolment can I start studying?

Students would normally receive their course materials within seven days of enrolment. Materials for this course are posted out via Royal Mail second class post.

Q: Is there any funding available towards the course fees?

UK Open College is a privately run college therefore we do not have access to funding

Q: Do you offer any discounts for the unemployed or low income households?

Unfortunately discounts are not available

Q: How do I know whether this is the right course for me?

In truth we cannot be sure if this course or indeed home learning will meet every students needs. To help we have a money back guarantee scheme in place which allows students to receive and try the course materials for seven days to establish whether this course is the ideal course for them. If it's not simply notify us via email or telephone within the seven day period for a full refund. Q: Is this course available to International students?

Yes! We currently have students all over the world studying with the college. With todays technology distance is no barrier at all. Students outside of the UK will need access to email to submit course assignments. Additional charges for delivery of paper course materials will apply if required.

Q: Are there any deadlines for course assignments?

No! You can submit course assignments at your own pace. The only deadline is for completion of the whole course which requires students to finish within one year of registration.

Q: What if I have questions relating to my course or have problems understanding some of the questions?

No problem! All students have access to a personal tutor for the duration of their course with whom they may correspond with. You are not on your own when you study with us! We really do want you to pass your course!

Q: Will I have to purchase any additional books or materials?

No! We provide all the required course materials to enable you to complete your studies.
