This course sets out in simple form the essentials for understanding alcohol and drug problems, for making an assessment of the individual. For giving appropriate help within one's own competence and for making referral to the agencies where necessary. The background of students might be diverse, but whatever the background the aim of this course is to enable the student to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to help the suffering individual and their family members into recovery.

Towards the end of the course we will cover this in relation to alcohol addiction, counselling and the treatment process.

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via telephone, email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required. This course consists of fourteen lessons overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. These assignments normally take between 1-2 hours to complete. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary.

In addition to the traditional method of tutor support students on this course will be given access to a student community.
