Personal Fitness Trainer course: This course is designed to enable the fitness instructor and coach develop their skills in providing a dedicated one-to-one service for health and fitness clients.

By reviewing and then expanding their knowledge, therapists will be expected to assess the wants and needs of their clients, test present fitness levels and design programmes which are tailored to each individual. Evaluation, re-testing and progression will form an integral part of the course. Providing a comprehensive service, the therapist will be a motivator, nutrition advisor, lifestyle consultant and instructor.

Identification of Sports Injuries

Define the following terms: The ages concept, Psychological fittess and Lifestyle

Analyse some of the most common foot problems
Introduce the posterior and anterior cruciate ligaments
Explain the following: Loose bodies, Busitis, Prepatellar Bursa, Biceps Bursa, Semimembranosis Bursa

Injuries of the Leg

Discuss a stress fracture, giving symptoms, causes and treatment
Evaluate a shin splint showing where it is found giving symptoms, cause and treatment
Analyse achilles tendinitis showing causes, symptoms and methods of treatment

Injuries of the shoulder

Desribe the two main muscles found in the neck, give a description of each and where they are situated
Explain the following injuries, giving symptoms, causes and treatment: Painful Arc, Frozen Shoulder and Dislocated shoulder

Injuries of the Hand, Arm and Elbow

Introduce symptoms, cause and treatment of the following injuries: Sprained Thumb, Carpel tunnel Syndrome and Golfers Elbow
Summarise dislocated  fingers and discuss finger infections

Sports Injuries

Discuss food and digestion, Include the six nutrient groups and the five food groups
Identify metabolism, Catabolism and Anabolism
Discuss seven factors that influence heat production

Explain six myths relating to diet, nutrition and food

Define the major mineral elements and trace elements
Summarise vitamins, the role they play, their classification and the two solubles into which they are divided

Identify a selection of foods that if used regularly will promote muscle growth

Discuss what first aid treatment for poisoning involves and the steps to take when poison has been ingested

There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme.

This course is open to students of all ages and backgrounds. Enrolments can be taken at anytime of the year unlike the traditional local college who tend only to enrol in September. Home Learning offers true flexibility.

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Students are welcome to complete this course as quickly as they want to.

On average this course is completed in 200 hours (9/10 months).  Extensions can be arranged if students do not complete within the year and charges will apply. We would ask you to contact our office on 0800 0131030 for latest extension fees if required.

We recommend that students complete 5-6 hours per week as a minimum to get the most from this course. Remember to work out a study plan / timetable before you start and try and stick to it.

Personal Trainer course

On completion of this course students can apply for membership to the Society for Holistic Therapists and Coaches (SHTC), a professional body who are dedicated to recognised standards of qualification and practice - students will also be able to use the initials 'SHTC' after their names.
This course is issued in paper format. Your course materials will be delivered to you at the specified address within 7 days of enrolment. International students should allow up to 21 days for delivery. If you prefer to study this course online please contact our admin team on 0800 0131030 and they will be happy to arrange this for you

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via telephone, email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. This course consists of Seventeen lessons overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. These assignments normally take between 1-2 hours to complete. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary. Upon completion of the course assignments students will be forwarded a paper based exam to complete from home.

In addition to the traditional method of tutor support students on this course will be given access to a student community.
