This course is available to learners aged 16+ who are interested in working within a school as a teaching assistant, classroom assistant or learning support assistant. This qualification has been developed to support the professionalism of the learning support workforce. It provides the basis for an introductory programme which is appropriate for new and existing learning support practitioners. This course represents a minimum standard for practice as a learning support practitioner. 

A school placement is required to complete this course. If you do not have a placement you need to complete our Level 2 Teaching Assistant course. Click here

Entry requirements:


There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme. Students are required to complete a minimum of 1 hour micro learning work in a placement over the period of one year.

Support:

All students will be assigned a personal tutor with whom they may correspond with via mail or email. Details will be in your course study pack.

Duration:

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Average study of 30 hours.

Course syllabus:

Students must complete the following mandatory unit.

Unit One : Preparing to support learning

This unit aims to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of key issues relating to learning support practice and to enable the learner to evaluate and improve learning support practice.

1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of lifelong learning
2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of learning support practice
3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key principles underpinning learning support practice
4 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of approaches to learning
5 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to evaluate and improve learning support practice


Examination:

No examination is necessary

Assessment method:

Students are required to complete a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their learning against each of the assessment criteria of the course. Portfolios will be assessed by the tutor.

Qualification:




Preparing to Support Learning in schools NCFE level 2

This qualification provides students with a qualification listed on the NQF database and carries 6 credits. It provides progression to NVQ and supporting teaching in schools Level 3 and also provides progression into employment and HLTA status.
