This is a knowledge based qualification suitable for all support staff roles in schools, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people. It seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context. As it's a knowledge based qualification, it can be taken by learners not yet employed in a school, as well as providing initial training/induction for those new in post.

The course consists of 5 mandatory units:

UNIT 1: Child and young person development

Know the main stages of child and young person development
Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development
Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young people’s development

UNIT 2: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

Know about the legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety
Know what to do when children or young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
Know how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied

UNIT 3: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

Know how to interact with and respond to children and young people
How to interact with and respond to adults
Know how to communicate with children, young people and adults
Know how to communicate with children, young people and adults
Know about current legislation, policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

UNIT 4: Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people 

Understand the importance of promoting equality and diversity in work with children and young people
Understand the impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
Understand inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people

UNIT 5: Schools as organisations

Know the different types of schools in the education sector
Know how schools are organised in terms of roles and responsibilities 
Understand how schools uphold their aims and values
Know about the laws and codes of practice that affect work in schools
Know about the range and purpose of school policies and procedures
Know about the wider context in which schools operate

This course provides successful students with a qualification from NCFE, listed on the qualifications and credit framework database. NCFE is recognised as an awarding organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the office of the qualifications and examinations regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government and the council for curriculum, examinations and assessment (CCA) in Northern Ireland

A fully qualified Teaching Assistant can expect to earn a salary of between 13K - 17K dependant on location. See the table below as a guideline. Please remember this is only a guide of potential earnings and your eventual salary could be less or more than displayed

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Students are welcome to complete this course as quickly as they want to.

On average this course is completed in 80 hours (4/5 months).  Extensions can be arranged if students do not complete within the year and charges will apply. We would ask you to contact our office on 0800 0131030 for latest extension fees if required.

We recommend that students complete 4-5 hours per week as a minimum to get the most from this course. Remember to work out a study plan / timetable before you start and try and stick to it.

This course is issued in paper format. Your course materials will be delivered to you at the specified address within 7 days of enrolment. International students should allow up to 21 days for delivery.

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. Please remember our tutors are here to help. Never be embarrassed to ask for help.

This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required. This course consists of five units overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. These assignments normally take between 1-2 hours to complete. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary.

Q: How do I know whether this is the right course for me?

In truth we cannot be sure if this course or indeed home learning will meet every students needs. Q: Are there any deadlines for course assignments?

No! You can submit course assignments at your own pace. The only deadline is for completion of the whole course which requires students to finish within one year of registration.

Q: What if I have questions relating to my course or have problems understanding some of the questions?

No problem! All students have access to a personal tutor for the duration of their course with whom they may correspond with. You are not on your own when you study with us! We really do want you to pass your course!

Q: Will I have to purchase any additional books or materials?

No! We provide all the required course materials to enable you to complete your studies.
