This course is available to learners aged 16+ who are interested in working within a school as a teaching assistant, classroom assistant or learning support assistant. This is a competence based qualification which requires students to be employed or have a placement within a school setting.

The aims of the course are to enable students to understand the roles and responsibilites to those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively in a self directed way. It prepares students to support the teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independance and skills for learning. It seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

Unit 3: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

Legilative guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety
What to do when children or young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
How to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, hartmed or bullied

Unit 4: Comminication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

How to interact with and respond to children and young people
How to interact with and respond to adults
How to communicate with children, young perople and adults
Current legislation, plocicies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, data protection

Unit 5: Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

The importance of promoting equality and diversity in work children and young people
The imapct of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
The inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people

Unit 6: Help improve own and team practice in schools

How to reflect and improve own practice
How to support the work of a team

Unit 7: Maintain and support relationships with children and young people

Unit 8: Support children and young people health and safety

The legislative and policy framework for health and safety

The policies and procedures of the setting for promoting children and young peoples positive behaviour

The different types of schools in the education center
How schools are organised in terms of roles and responsibilty
How schools uphold their aims and values
The laws and codes of practice that effect work in schools
The range and purpose of school policies and procedures
The wider context in which schools operate

Unit 11: Prepare and mainatin learning environments

How to prepare learning environments
How to prepare learning materials
How to monitor and maintain learning environments


There are no previous skills or qualifications required to register for this study programme however students are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours work in a placement over the period of one year.

This course is open to students of all ages and backgrounds. Enrolments can be taken at anytime of the year unlike the traditional local college who tend only to enrol in September. Home Learning offers true flexibility.

This course provides successful students with a qualification from NCFE, listed on the qualifications and credit framework database. NCFE is recognised as an awarding organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the office of the qualifications and examinations regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government and the council for curriculum, examinations and assessment (CCA) in Northern Ireland

A fully qualified Teaching Assistant can expect to earn a salary of between 13K - 17K dependant on location. See the table below as a guideline. Please remember this is only a guide of potential earnings and your eventual salary could be less or more than displayed

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Students are welcome to complete this course as quickly as they want to.

On average this course is completed in 180 hours (8/9 months).  Extensions can be arranged if students do not complete within the year and charges will apply. We would ask you to contact our office on 0800 0131030 for latest extension fees if required.

We recommend that students complete 4-5 hours per week as a minimum to get the most from this course. Remember to work out a study plan / timetable before you start and try and stick to it.

This course is issued in paper format. Your course materials will be delivered to you at the specified address within 7 days of enrolment. International students should allow up to 21 days for delivery.

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. Please remember our tutors are here to help. Never be embarrassed to ask for help.

This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required. This course consists of eleven units overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. These assignments normally take between 1-2 hours to complete. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary.

No problem! All students have access to a personal tutor for the duration of their course with whom they may correspond with. You are not on your own when you study with us! We really do want you to pass your course!
