This course is available to learners aged 16+ who are interested in working within a school as a teaching assistant, classroom assistant or learning support assistant. The aims of the course are to enable students to understand the roles and responsibilities to those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively in a self directed way. It prepares students to support the teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and skills for learning. It seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

A school placement is required to complete this course. If you do not have a placement please consider our Cache Level 3 Award

Students must complete the following mandatory units

Unit 1: Understand children and young people development

This unit provides knowledge and understanding of how children and young people from birth to 19 years develop. Including underpinning theoretical perspectives. It also includes actions taken whenn differences in development are identified and the potential effects of transitions on children and yong peoples development.

Unit 2: Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding required to support the safeguaring of children and young people. This unit contains e-material on safety

Unit 3: Support children and young peoples safety

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support children and young peoples health and safety. It requires a demonstration of competence in recognising hazards and undertaking risk assessments in the work setting.

Unit 4: Engage in personal development in young peoples settings

This unit is aimed at those who work in health or social care settings or with children or young people in a wide range of settings. This unit considers personal development and reflective practice which are both fundmental to both roles.

Unit 5: Support learning activities

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to support learning activities. It requires competence in supporting the planning, delivery, assessment and review cycle.

Unit 6: Promote children and young peoples positive behaviour

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to promote children and young peoples positive behaviour. It requires demonstration of competence in promoting positive behaviour, managing innapropriate behaviour, dealing with challenging behaviour and contributing to reviews of behaviour and behaviour policies.

Unit 7: Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults

This unit covers the competence required to develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults.

Unit 8: Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people. It requires demonstration of competence in promoting equality and diversity and supporting inclusion.

Unit 9: Support assessment for learning

This unit provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to support assessment for learning. It requires demonstration of competence in using assessment strategies to promote learning, supporting learners to review their learning strategies and achievements, and working with the teacher to review assessment for learning processes and outcomes.

Unit 10: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

This unit provides the knowledge and understanding which underpins effective communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.

Unit 11: Schools as organisations
This unit aims to prepare the learner for working in a school.

It covers knowledge and understanding of the structure of education, how schools are organised, school ethos, mission, aims and values, legislative and policy frameworks and the wider context in which schools operate.

Level 3 NCFE Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

This course provides successful students with a qualification from NCFE, listed on the qualifications and credit framework database. NCFE is recognised as an awarding organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are: the office of the qualifications and examinations regulator (Ofqual) in England, the Welsh Government and the council for curriculum, examinations and assessment (CCA) in Northern Ireland. Delivered in partnership with My Distance Learning College an accredited NCFE Centre.

A fully qualified Teaching Assistant can expect to earn a salary of between 13K - 17K dependant on location. See the table below as a guideline. Please remember this is only a guide of potential earnings and your eventual salary could be less or more than displayed

All students have one year to complete this course from date of registration. Students are welcome to complete this course as quickly as they want to.

On average this course is completed in 180 hours (8/9 months).  Extensions can be arranged if students do not complete within the year and charges will apply. We would ask you to contact our office on 0800 0131030 for latest extension fees if required.

We recommend that students complete 4-5 hours per week as a minimum to get the most from this course. Remember to work out a study plan / timetable before you start and try and stick to it.

This course is issued in paper format. Your course materials will be delivered to you at the specified address within 7 days of enrolment. International students should allow up to 21 days for delivery.

All students on this course will be registered to a personal tutor who is contactable via email or post. We also have a team of dedicated advisors to help and advise with any course related queries. The tutors role is to help and support students for the entire duration of their studies. Please remember our tutors are here to help. Never be embarrassed to ask for help.

This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required. This course consists of eleven units overall. Students will be required to submit assignments after each lesson via email or post proving their understanding of the subject covered. These assignments normally take between 1-2 hours to complete. A grade and report will be issued on your progress with any suggestions for improvement if necessary.

No problem! All students have access to a personal tutor for the duration of their course with whom they may correspond with. You are not on your own when you study with us! We really do want you to pass your course!
