The syllabus contains 20 units in total.
Units one to four are compulsory units to be completed by all students.
Students can then choose any six of the remaining sixteen units to complete their diploma.

Investigating Travel & Tourism
Know the components of travel and tourism and how they interrelate
Know the roles and responsibilities of travel and tourism within the different sectors
Understand how recent developments have shaped the present day travel industry
Understand the trends and factors affecting the development of travel and tourism

Unit two:
The business of travel and tourism

Know the features of different types of travel and tourism organisations
Be able to complete a cash flow forecast
Plan a travel and tourism project with financial constraints
Understand how a travel and tourism organisation gains competitive advantage to achieve its aims

Unit three:
The UK as a destination

Be able to use sources of reference to provide information on UK destinations
Know the location of the main UK gateways, tourist destinations and geographical features
Understand the appeal of UK destinations
Understand the needs of UK domestic and inbound tourism markets and the way in which the UK meets these needs
Understand key trends and factors affecting the UK inbound and domestic tourism markets.

Customer service in travel and tourism

Tour operations

Understand the UK tour operations environment
Know the range of products and services offered by tour operators

Unit fourteen:
Roles and responsibilities of holiday representatives

Know the roles and responsibilities of different categories of holiday representatives
Understand the legal responsibilities of the holiday representative
Understand the importance of health and safety in relation to the role of a holiday representative
Be able to apply social, customer service and selling skills when dealing with transfers, welcome meetings and other situations

Events, conferences and exhibitions

Understand the event, conference and exhibition environment in the UK
Know the types of venues utilised for events, conferences and exhibitions
Be able to produce an event, conference or exhibition programme for a give client brief, taking into account significant factors
Be able to prepare costings for an event, conference or exhibition

Unit eighteen
The importance and appeal of UK attractions

Know the products and services provided by different types of visitor attraction
Know the range of and purpose of techniques used for investor interpretation
Understand the appeal of visitor attractions to different types of visitor
Understand the importance of visitor attractions to the popularity and appeal of a UK tourist destination

Unit nineteen:
Hospitality operations in travel and tourism

Understand how hospitality providers meet customer expectations
Be able to plan hospitality provision for a travel and tourism organisation
Understand the factors affecting hospitality operations in travel and tourism

Unit twenty four:
Handling air passengers

Know the options available to customers when travelling to and from airports
Understand the process of embarkation and the roles of airport and airline staff
Know the facilities and services available to passengers during flight
Know the airport and airline services and facilities during the disembarkation process

Unit twenty six:
Current issues in travel and tourism

Understand the methods that can be used to research a current issue affecting the travel and tourism industry
Be able to conduct research into a current issue affecting the travel and tourism industry, using appropriate resources
Be able to communicate findings on a travel and tourism issue using appropriate media and conventions
Understand the impacts of a current issue on the travel and tourism industry

No examination is necessary

Assessment method:

This course is completed using continual assessment, allowing your tutor to closely monitor your progress every step of the way. Therefore no examination is required.

Qualification: 

Diploma in Travel and Tourism issued by the UK Open College

Once completed successfully each student will receive their Diploma from the college proving their skills and knowledge in this rewarding field. Add this to your completed folder of courswork and impress any potential employer.
